Multi-purpose fly cutter, patented
was developed to cover a wide range of machine shop applications on hard or soft materials, using the standard 3/16” -1/2” I.C
Carbide inserts that have been “used up” in standard insert holders, or special high speed inserts that can be supplied with the tool. This tool was in effect developed to re-use burnt, chipped and blunted carbide inserts.
Introduction and claims:

The S.P.A method (the pat reg. "cam cone-lock") of clamping an insert was developed to introduce a more versatile option of using & re-using inserts in addition to the standard single purpose tool-holders for both milling machines and lathes (work or cutter revolving) and to fill a certain gap in the M/C shop.

To eliminate (or at least to reduce) the need to buy and stock a wide range of single purpose tool-holders and inserts, at a cost that is just not warranted by the lack of repetitive production in tool rooms and maintenance shops.

The gap in the production shop where in spite of all the standard cutters and inserts stocked, there will always be the need for a certain special secondary operation tool that can be done faster and cheaper with S.P.A.

The adjustable –patented “cam-cone” lock on the cutting insert was designed to rigidly clamp the insert with maximum possibility for regrinds, or grinding for secondary operations for use on both milling machines or lathes.

For rapid regrinds only one area needs to be ground, the combined lead and relief angles.
The rake angle can be set, suitable for hard or soft materials and locked.
